Derek Lau
Director of Media &. Senior Coach

Derek Lau grew up in the Kitsilano neighbourhood and attended St. George’s Senior School. Derek first started playing tennis at the age of 6 and began to play competitively during his high school years. Derek was selected to represent British Columbia at the Canadian National Championships in the Under 16 and Under 18 age categories.

 

Derek’s first experience in coaching was in 2009 as a volunteer at UBC Tennis Centre. The opportunity to teach and develop the next generation of tennis players is what drives him to be the best mentor possible. Derek was then hired to coach at the West End Community Center in 2010 teaching junior programs. Since then Derek has coached at St. George's Summer Camps, Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club, and Cameron Recreation Centre. Derek has significant experience teaching all ages and levels of students ranging from beginners to high-performance players.

 

Derek completed his undergraduate degree in Criminology at Simon Fraser University. Off the court, Derek enjoys mountain biking, listening to music, working on cars, and fitness.
